Artist Profile

Janis Barbieri paints under her maiden name Janis Taber.

Jan’s background is in fashion. She has a passion for combining colours and creating displays and accessories. During the years there have been various hobbies, music and crafts and she was very successful at making life-size scarecrows, which were featured in Garden magazines.

Jan has had a passion for horses all her life, living on a hobby farm on the Mornington Peninsula, she has bred quarter horses, and enjoyed riding in English and then Western events. Later with the addition of many more animals, Jan’s menagerie now includes a dog, 8 alpacas, a pony, 2 sheep and a husband.

When Jan retired, she started painting acrylics. She loves being surrounded by animals and tending her big rambling cottage garden, which she often photographs. Sometimes Jan paints from the photos she has taken. Birds, animals and gardens inspire her; sometimes being subtle with fine detail and other times being bold, bright and experimenting with texture. More recently she has begun working with alcohol inks. Jan’s paintings depict her love of nature and colour.

Janis Taber has sold paintings at Mornington Rotary Art Show 2018, 2019 and 2020; Chelsea Art Show, Peninsula Arts Society and Lifescope Art Show. 2018 Janis won First Prize Oils /Acrylic at Rotary Club of Chelsea Art Show.

Jan’s pure silk Scarves are each individually hand painted, she has sold these at Hastings Craft Expo and at Peninsula Arts Society Show. Jan is a member of the Peninsula Artists Studio Trail, PST.
